Slough
On the edge of the County of Berkshire sits the town of Slough with a population of around 110,000 and benefiting from its easy access to major road, rail and air routes, The town has frequently been described as having a real rich mix of cultures and is undoubtedly an economic success story for the South-East. Slough has proved to be a popular location for business development with the country’s motorway infrastructure just a short drive. Slough also benefits from its proximity to London Heathrow Airport the main airport for the city of London.
The Great Western Railway runs through the centre of Slough enabling passengers to reach London in approximately 20 minutes and by road a little longer about 30 minutes – traffic permitting.
The A4 which runs east to west, and still referred to as the Bath Road, was a Roman road and still today follows roughly the same line as when it was first laid with the exception of the by-pass, of course, around the town centre.
Slough can also boast that it was the home of the famous astronomer Sir William Herschel and the present ICL building was the original site of his reflecting telescope. With the town’s proximity to Windsor one can understand why it has received a considerable amount of Royal patronage and most recently, in accordance with Princess Margaret’s wishes, her funeral arrangements.
One could also say that Slough’s most recent claim to fame is the very popular comedy series ‘The Office’ which has drawn people from all over the UK on a quest to find is location!
